Markus Heller has a thorough awareness of actual carfree development. The Germans appear to be leading the way in reclaiming cities from the auto on a large scale. I earlier linked to Marcus' Autofrei leben in Europa presentation.

Alas, I do not read German. If you're planning to be a carfree urban planner, you'd do well to learn German. English translation of part of his site: Carfree Living. Markus has been involved in planning TCFCIV.
