"The world evolves around economads; down to earth nomads in quest of future civilization. Welcome to our homelesspage at economads.com where we share the joy of economadic living." Ofek and Erika and child have been traveling around, checking out ecovillages and other communities, while eschewing planes and automobile transport (trains and cruise ships instead). They have a neat "Library-of-Awareness."
Link Intentional Communities remote url Link 2003-07-07 2004-10-16
Intentional Community is an inclusive term for ecovillages, cohousing, residential land trusts, communes, student co-ops, urban housing cooperatives and other related projects and dreams... This Web site serves the growing communities movement. We provide important information and access to crucial resources for seekers of community, existing and forming communities, and other friends of community. The "communities directory":http://directory.ic.org/ is now online! For those who travel and don't want to lug their book around, this is great.
Link The Federation of Egalitarian Communities remote url Link 2003-07-07 2003-07-07
The Federation of Egalitarian Communities is a network of communal groups spread across North America. We range in size and emphasis from small agricultural homesteads to village-like communities to urban group houses. Each of the Federation communities: * Holds its land, labor, income and other resources in common. * Assumes responsibility for the needs of its members, receiving the products of their labor and distributing these and all other goods equally, or according to need. * Practices non-violence * Uses a form of decision making in which members have an equal opportunity to participate, either through consensus, direct vote or right of appeal or overrule. * Works to establish the equality of all people and does not permit discrimination on the basis of race, class, creed, ethnic origin, age, sex or sexual orientation. * Acts to conserve natural resources for present and future generations while striving to continually improve ecological awareness and practice. * Creates processes for group communication and participation and provides an environment which supports people's development
Link Twelve Tribes, the Commonwealth of Israel remote url Link 2003-07-07 2006-02-09
This is a spiritual communal community to watch. They have communities all around the world with over 2,000 members. Most of us will not accept some of their views (anti-gay; "we are the only chosen ones" ideology; corporal punishment of children; women submit to male authority) but their success and growth has lessons we can learn from... In particular, perhaps, the importance of authority, leadership, and vision. Don't forget to check out "twelvetribes-ex.org":http://www.twelvetribes-ex.org/ as well. The twelve tribes seem to be well-run and well publicized. Here's a "story of my encounter with them on the Washington DC mall":../12tstory/.
Link Yoism - the world's first opensource religion remote url Link 2003-07-07 2003-07-07
"Yo is the world's first opensource religion . We believe that people's beliefs must be consistent with their own experience and sense of what's right. This is the only viable path toward Truth. Yoan beliefs are not based on some received wisdom from some long-dead, special authority. Rather, they are based on the consensus of the Yoan community. This consensus is the foundation upon which we build our communities, and upon which we strive to improve our world. We are united in our goals: world wide justice, environmental sanity, and healthier communities. In short, a sustainable humanity." Yoism is notable also because it sprang from an awareness that successful cooperative endeavors are often spiritually motivated (the twelve tribes are an example). Note that their projects include an urban ecovillage in Boston.

these folks have toured ecovillages in North America and (eventually) Europe and written about their impressions.
Link Earthaven ecovillage remote url Link 2003-07-28 2003-07-28
Many at Earthaven aspire for it to eventually be a carfree ecovillage. The question is how do we get there from here? Their greatest need is more villagers! This is a (possibly 'the') nexus of the ecovillage/permaculture movement in the US-- _permaculture activist_ and _communities magazine_ are both published out of Earthaven. I'm currently at Earthaven (2003-07-28).
Link School of Living remote url Link 2003-08-04 2003-08-04
This appears to be a support/educational organization for communities. Some people who work for it showed up at Earthaven, and I thought I'd add their link here, though I'm not clear how useful it will be. Here's their mission statement: The School of Living is an educational organization dedicated to learning and teaching the philosophy, practices and principles of living that are self-empowering for individuals within the general aim of establishing decentralized, ecologically-sound, self-governed and humane communities. All its resources, but most specifically the land it holds in trust, are held in responsible stewardship for present and future generations.

Link Radburn: a city for the motor age remote url Link 2003-08-11 2003-08-11
Radburn is a place where community involvement can take place; where the emphasis is on a program to meet the needs of children of all ages, as well as adults; where there is open space (parks); where the main thoroughfares are separated from the pedestrian walks; where the property is small , but the common parks make up for the lack of yard space. It is a planned community which still meets the needs of the people just as it has for the last fifty years. Times change, but the concept of Stein, Wright and Ascher is still as valid today as it was in 1929.

Link Village of Cheshire (New Urbanism) remote url Link 2003-08-11 2005-04-24
Found this while biking to earthaven from asheville-- driveways and garages are hidden or nonexistent... streets are narrow... nice PR... from the web site: "The Village of Cheshire, a new community in Black Mountain, North Carolina, is becoming a reality. This classically inspired and health oriented vibrant community integrates homes within walking distance of a traditional town center of shops, cafes, offices, parks, walking trails, an outdoor amphitheater and "green" areas. It's a welcome trend back to the past, a place we all remember from childhood but can rarely find in today's world."
Link The ManKind Project remote url Link 2003-08-11 2004-04-16
This is a big thing at Earthaven and was discussed at the recent permaculture gathering... I have no experience with it though!
Link School for Designing a Society remote url Link 2003-08-11 2003-08-11

Link Wild Fermentation remote url Link 2003-08-11 2003-08-11
I found out about this at the permaculture gathering at Earthaven in a workshop on making herbal elixirs (incl. making beer and wine) led by Frank Cook.
