Rylander Homesite - Lower Rosy Branch Neighborhood - June 2004 | Image | 2004-06-30 | 2004-06-30
Attached is a photo of our house in progress. We have installed the strawbales on the roof for insulation and have epdm over them. We will now put dirt on top. WE have made about 2,000 adobe brick with a cinva ram press. We will now start up with our adobe, cob, clay straw slip, and cordwood walls. Our pond is about half full. The side of the mountain is tall with grasses and weeds. We have various fruit trees and grapes planted. Hopefully we will have the house and greenhouse basically finished in about two months. Lower East Side Wabisabi | Image | 2004-06-30 | 2008-03-05
Originally this was linked to from "hoboschool":../hoboschool/ and linked to "http://www.6bgarden.org/images/galley1/william9.jpg":http://www.6bgarden.org/images/galley1/william9.jpg. A site on "6bgarden.org":http://www.6bgarden.org/#gallery. But it's not up any more and this was the largest version I could find (from google's cache). Linking to others' images is risky and not the best netiquette, admittedly. It is a sort of sculpture a guy built on his community garden plot that is some 40 feet high.

The use of imagery, versification, sound patterning, and sound effects in Shakespeare's sonnet 33 | Image | 2004-10-09 | 2004-10-09
I discuss some ways the words of sonnet 33 combine to produce effect, focusing on sounds of words in addition to their overall sense.

Is there love in A Midsummer Night's Dream? | Image | 2004-10-09 | 2004-10-09
After first seeing a performance of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, I would have called it a love story. After reading it several times, I am less sure what it is. I will take a closer look at the behavior and context of the characters to understand how a comedy with three marriages and as many as seven lovers almost concludes without a portrayal of love that satisfies me. The pairings I consider are: Theseus and Hippolyta, Hermia and Lysander, Helena and Demetrius, Helena and Hermia, Titania and Oberon, Titania and Bottom, and Pyramus and Thisby.

CLOSED TO ALL VEHICLES / Zion National Park | Image | 2006-02-12 | 2008-03-05
Credit Brad Anderson of "Architectural Photography Incorporated":http://architecturephotoinc.com/. I met him through the "local Ishmael group":../sdishmael/, and he took this picture specifically to be used for the carfree cause. I have the high-res 50MB TIFF file if anyone wants to make a poster of this. It was taken in December 2005. See also: o "A close-up":closed_crop.jpg (488k). o "Google on Zion National Park":http://www.google.com/search?q=zion+national+park. o "Banning cars makes for a peaceful park":http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20051113/news_1t13zion.html. This article by Steve Hendrix appeared in the Union Tribune on November 13, 2005. The original, slightly longer article can be found in the "Washington Post":http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/01/AR2005070100998.html.<blockquote>Starting [in 2000], the Park Service launched a radical pilot program that has, by all accounts, transformed the visitor's experience. From April through October, the park actually does ban private cars along the six-mile scenic route, along with motorcycles, tour buses and RVs. The only way to the park's most popular sites is by foot, bicycle or one of these free shuttles that run like clockwork from 5:35 a.m. to nearly midnight.</blockquote>

San Diego Ishmael Meeting Announcement in Union Tribune | Image | 2006-02-25 | 2006-02-25
This is notable? I thought it was special enough to scan in. . . Someday I may not get so excited about causing something to appear in print. It did involve getting the meeting time and location determined 14 days in advance. The ad had to be submitted ten days prior to desired date of publication. So, it is a symbol of a more advanced state of organization of the group, or at least of one particular group member's motivation. Whether my efforts help the group grow or just burn off some energy exercising fledgling publicity muscles remains to be seen. |
